Dalle 4 alle 8 del pomeriggio, oggi è il giorno giusto per entrare gratuitamente al MoMA - The Museum of Modern Art. C'è una lunghissima fila, ma fluida e veloce per l'ingresso. La stessa gente però è all'interno e si muove come un serpente su ogni piano dell'edificio, in ogni sala delle mostre in corso, davanti ad ogni opera esposta. Capolavori dell'arte moderna, spesso visti solo sui libri, sono esposti senza apparente protezione, davanti a folle di persone che si fotografano accanto alla zuppa leggendaria, davanti alla bionda icona del nostro secolo, adiacenti a quadri impressionisti...

New Museum
Ritorniamo a Manhattan e andiamo al New Museum, nuovo museo di arte contemporanea progettato dallo studio giapponese SANAA (Sejima + Nishizawa) e aperto nel 2007 nel Lower East Side. Fuori è già buio e sulla facciata campeggia la scritta luminosa arcobaleno HELL, YES! di Ugo Rondinone. Entriamo gratuitamente perché è il giorno e l'ora giusta. Saliamo al quinto piano con l'ascensore (le scale sono solo per le uscite d'emergenza): Museum as Hub: The Bidoun Library Project, in visione e da sfogliare indossando guanti bianchi. Al quarto e terzo piano la mostra A Day Like Any Other di Rivane Neuenschwander, continua al piano terra con I Wish Your Wish dove prendo un braccialetto ed esprimo un desiderio.

Ci spostiamo a Long Island City, nel Queens, per andare al P.S.1. Un'ex Public School (scuola pubblica) che il MoMA ha trasformato in uno spazio per l'arte giovane contemporanea. In corso la mostra Greater New York - New Art in New York Now. Giriamo su e giù per tutti i piani e immaginiamo i bambini scendere di corsa le scale (con le grate di sicurezza), andiamo nei loro bagni, giochiamo in cortile all'uscita da scuola...
In prossimità del P.S.1 c'è un complesso industriale totalmente ricoperto di graffiti: è 5 Pointz: The Institute of Higher Burnin'. 5 Pointz sono i cinque boroughs, i quartieri storici di New York (Queens, Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn e Staten Island), è l'epicentro della scena dei graffiti e ospita opere di writers provenienti da tutto il mondo.

Il Metropolitan Museum of Art è immenso, è un museo molto grande, quindi bisogna scegliere cosa visitare di volta in volta, va gustato a tappe, un pò come tutta la città.
'Mettetevi il cuore in pace': NY non si può visitare tutta in una volta sola (soprattutto se è il periodo lungo una normale vacanza turistica), va mangiata a morsi, come una Big Apple (Grande Mela)!
Nella hall ci sono una serie di biglietterie con le tariffe d'ingresso e addirittura alcuni sportelli che utilizzano solo carte di credito. Ma non lasciatevi ingannare dalle guide e dai prezziari ($10/$15/$20), le tariffe sono solo Suggested, ovvero suggerite, in realtà l'ingresso è ad offerta, ognuno può donare quanto vuole. Arrivato il nostro turno abbiamo offerto alla cassiera $3 per 4 adulti e 1 bambino.
Sul tetto bellissima vista su Manhattan e fino al 31 Ottobre potete addentrarvi fra gli intrecci della scultura temporanea di bambù "Big Bambù" di Doug and Mike Starn.
